I come out into my tiny verandah early one morning and the first thing I see is this iguana stretched out on top of one of my orchids!
I freak out and shout: “Get off my plant!!”
The iguana scampers away.
I settle down to have my cup of tea.
A few mornings later, I am sitting in my rocking chair having my tea. A mosquito starts harassing me. I pick up the mosquito swatter and start waving it about.
I hit the large bushy plant that is right next to me.
I nearly jump out of my skin, startled by a high-pitched yelping coming from the plant.
I look down and see an iguana stretched out in the plant, obviously alarmed. I didn’t know that iguanas made a noise.
We both eventually settle down and I start to reflect on the meaning of this.
This goes on for several more days.
I go into meditation hoping that the message will come to me. A name comes into my mind – Ignaçu.
Ignaçu stays in the plant – absolutely relaxed – for about a week. Then he disappears.
I am disappointed because I still haven’t figured out the message. I know from previous research that Iguanas are messenger spirits.
Then, one morning I come out into the living room. There is Ignaçu stretched out full length on the couch!
Startled, I say loudly: “What are you doing there!”
So he scampers off.
I sigh. You would think I would have learned by now, right? How am I going to figure out the message if I keep chasing him?
Sounds like the story of my life…
